Site & AI-Search Scorecard

How kalex.kendal.org performs when a family — or an AI — goes looking.

We reviewed the public pages of Kendal at Lexington the way a prospective resident's adult child does: from a search box, on a phone, with a short attention span. Then we re-ran it the way an AI answer engine does — looking for structured, attributable facts.

Scope: home page, Campus, Assisted Living/Personal Care, Pricing Information, FAQ and the News archive. Scored on what we could actually retrieve on 18 September 2026.

Three findings, with the receipts

Each of these is quoted from a live Kendal at Lexington page. None requires a redesign — all three are content and markup fixes on a site that already works.

01
SEO · Metadata

The Assisted Living page's meta description is auto-generated and cuts off mid-sentence.

“Assisted Living at Kendal at Lexington Studio residences in Webster Center provide comfort and privacy, along with extra support for the activities of” Meta description — kalex.kendal.org/care-services/assisted-living-personal-care/

It stops at “the activities of” — the phrase “daily living” never arrives. This is the snippet a family sees in search results for one of your highest-intent pages. Page titles across the site follow the same machine pattern (“Campus - Kendal at Lexington”, “FAQ - Kendal at Lexington”) with no service or geography in them.

Why it matters: a truncated, keyword-free snippet is the single cheapest thing to lose a click on. Roughly a dozen hand-written titles and descriptions across the care-services and planning sections fix it permanently.
02
AEO · Structured data

You have a genuinely good FAQ — and no schema telling machines it is one.

“What is Kendal at Lexington?” — “Kendal at Lexington is a full-service Life Plan Community (also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community) located in Lexington, Virginia.” One of ~10 Q&A pairs — kalex.kendal.org/about/faq/

The answers are plain, static, indexable HTML — exactly the format AI answer engines prefer. But in the page content we retrieved we found no FAQPage, LocalBusiness or Organization JSON-LD, and the page sits at /about/faq/ rather than alongside the care pages it answers for. We were also unable to confirm an llms.txt file at the site root — our request for it did not complete, so we are recording this as unverified rather than absent.

Why it matters: when ChatGPT, Gemini or an AI Overview answers “what does assisted living at Kendal at Lexington include?”, it cites sources it can parse and attribute. Your content already deserves the citation; the markup is what withholds it.
03
Local SEO · NAP

Two different phone numbers on a single conversion page.

“Fill out the form below to view the current Schedule of Fees. You can also learn about our fees by calling us directly at (800) 976-8303.”

“For direct admission fees and information on Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living, please contact us at (540) 463-1910.” Both on kalex.kendal.org/planning/pricing-information/

The local number 540.463.1910 is the one carried in the site header and on the care pages. The 800 number appears only here. Two numbers on your money page is a small conversion tax; more importantly, inconsistent Name-Address-Phone data across a site, a Google Business Profile and directory listings is a well-known drag on local pack ranking.

Why it matters: a family that dials the 800 number and a family that dials the local one should land in the same place with the same tracking. Right now you cannot tell from analytics which page earned the call.
Credit where due

What we would not touch

A redesign is not the recommendation here. These are the parts of the site already doing real work, and a rebuild would put them at risk.

Pricing is actually on the page

Your Pricing Information page publishes entrance- and monthly-fee ranges before asking for an email. Most Life Plan Community sites in Virginia gate everything. This is a real differentiator and a trust signal — keep it.

The care continuum is legible

Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support, Skilled Nursing, Long-term Care and Rehab are each named and separately addressed, with the Assisted Living page stating a concrete count of 19 studio residences in Webster Center.

The news archive is alive

Posts through 1 September 2026, including leadership announcements and the Fitch rating upgrade. Freshness is a ranking and citability input, and most peer sites go quiet for quarters at a time.

Trust signals are present

501(c)(3) governance stated plainly in the FAQ, CARF accreditation and LeadingAge membership surfaced in the footer, and a clear explanation of the Lifecare contract in the news section.

The sequence

Ninety days, in the order we would do it

Ordered by effort-to-impact. Nothing here requires a new template, a new CMS or a content freeze.

30DAYS

Fix what is already written

  • Hand-write titles and meta descriptions for the care-services and planning pages; start with Assisted Living, where the description currently truncates mid-sentence.
  • Standardize on one primary phone number sitewide; if the 800 line stays, label what it is for.
  • Audit Name-Address-Phone against the Google Business Profile and the major senior-living directories.
  • Add LocalBusiness / SeniorLivingResidence JSON-LD with address, phone, geo and hours.
60DAYS

Make the content machine-readable

  • Wrap the existing FAQ in FAQPage schema — no rewriting needed, the answers are already clean.
  • Push three or four of the highest-intent questions onto the care pages themselves, with their own schema.
  • Publish an llms.txt at the root pointing AI crawlers to care levels, pricing, FAQ and contact.
  • Add Article schema and visible dates to every news post, not just the newest.
90DAYS

Close the measurement loop

  • Instrument tour requests, pricing-form submissions and click-to-call as distinct tracked events.
  • Baseline AI-answer visibility: track how often Kendal at Lexington is named and cited for a fixed set of Rockbridge County queries.
  • Connect inquiry source to move-in outcome so marketing spend can be judged on move-ins, not form fills.
  • Review the first two phases against real numbers and re-score.
Where we come in

The fixes above are marketing work. The last phase is ours.

BI Consulting Services builds AnalytIQCore — occupancy and lead-conversion forecasting, staffing against acuity and census, risk monitoring and financial performance for senior living operators. It connects to the systems you already run, and it is how “did the website work?” becomes a number instead of an argument.
